Ask a captain what makes a great crew and you will hear the same word from all of them: balance. Nobody wants eight of the same person, however excellent that person is. A boat full of drivers burns out. A boat full of soothers never leaves the dock on time. The magic is in the mix.

The eight, in the wild

• The one the room goes quiet for. Authority without volume, the crew's keel.
• The radar. Reads a guest, a mood, a brewing problem before anyone else has looked up.
• The generator. Energy arrives with them. Week ten feels like week one within arm's reach of this person.
• The fixer. Calmest human on board the moment something breaks, and something always breaks.
• The glue. Remembers birthdays, defuses the galley argument, holds the crew's story together.
• The standard. Their personal bar becomes the boat's bar, without a word of enforcement.
• The bridge. Translates between departments, between deck and interior, between captain and crew.
• The spark. The ideas, the jokes, the theme night that saved a brutal charter. Morale is a job, and this is who does it.

Nobody is only one of these. Everyone leads with one or two, carries a few more in reserve, and has at least one that costs them real effort. The point of naming them is not to put people in boxes. It is to let a crew see its own shape: what it is rich in, what it is missing, and who is quietly carrying a double load.
